Overview
Can a Harley finally lift its head from the boulevard to bite into the asphalt of curves? With the XG 750 Street Rod, Milwaukee took the bold gamble of beefing up its entry-level model to create a more assertive urban roadster. It’s far from the V-Rod, but this 2019 version of the Street 750 clearly seeks to seduce a new generation, one that dreams of more immediate sensations without renouncing the iconic look.

Under the hood, the 60° V-twin has undergone a rejuvenation. Named "High Output," it seriously gains character thanks to a compression ratio pushed to 12:1 and reworked engine management. Result: 71 horsepower at 9000 rpm and a torque of 65.7 Nm available earlier. It’s not a rocket, but the difference with the standard Street is palpable: the engine breathes better, revs more willingly, and releases a welcome burst of energy when you open the throttle. The braking system, with its two 300 mm front discs, is finally up to its sporty ambitions.
But the real change lies in the chassis. Harley-Davidson has seriously reworked the geometry: a rake angle reduced to 27 degrees and a shortened wheelbase promise unprecedented agility. The 43 mm inverted fork and reworked shock absorbers confirm this desire. In the saddle at 765 mm, the rider is placed in a more engaged position, the flat handlebar and rear-set foot controls encouraging active riding. The Street Rod throws itself into curves with surprising agility, even if its weight of 238 kg when fully fueled is felt in quick transitions.
Facing competitors like the Yamaha MT-07 or the Triumph Street Triple, the Harley-Davidson XG 750 Street Rod doesn’t play in the same league in terms of pure performance or chassis finesse. It remains a heavy machine, with a less lively engine and a 13-liter tank a little tight for long road trips. Its price, around €8500 at the time, placed it in a very competitive range. Yet, it has its audience: those who want the Harley attitude and sound, but with a touch of agility in the city and on winding roads. It’s a motorcycle with character for a rider who assumes their aesthetic choices above all.
One point of vigilance concerns models produced between 2015 and 2018, subject to a recall campaign for a corrosion problem on the brake caliper. A detail to check if you are looking at a used model. Ultimately, this Street Rod did not revolutionize the segment, but it showed that Harley-Davidson could, when it wanted to, step out of its comfort zone and shake up its own codes. An interesting attempt, even if it was not enough to create a lineage.
