Overview
When Milwaukee decides to add a simple "S" to a model's badge, beware. With some manufacturers, this suffix conceals a transparent marketing exercise. With Harley-Davidson, on the 2015 Street Glide, it hides something more substantial: a coherent step up in specification, conceived for the American grand tourer who wants everything, now, without compromise.

The heart of the beast remains the 1690cc Twin Cam High Output, a 45-degree V-twin that makes no attempt to dazzle with power figures. 86 horsepower at 5,010 rpm is honest without being earth-shattering for this displacement. But the real argument is torque: 137.3 Nm available from 3,500 rpm. On the highway, in fifth or sixth gear, the machine rolls forward with the serenity of an ocean liner. You don't ride a Street Glide Special — you command it. The High Output's dedicated camshaft and dedicated airbox make the difference over the base 103ci, particularly in mid-range roll-ons that constitute the bulk of long-distance touring riding.
The technology chapter deserves a closer look. The BOOM! Box 6.5 GT system represents the best Harley can do in terms of electronic integration within a resolutely analog universe. The 6.5-inch touchscreen sits in the Batwing fairing like a private jet's instrument panel: GPS, Bluetooth, voice recognition for phone calls, radio, USB and SD card inputs, 75 watts per channel. By comparison, the Honda Gold Wing of the era offered similar connectivity, but in a less American, less visceral package. The Street Glide Special bets on the overall sensory experience, not merely a feature checklist. And the standard cruise control, for long stints on the open road, is an obvious amenity whose absence on certain Germanic competitors is all the more regrettable.
The chassis inherited from Project Rushmore holds its own. The 49mm telescopic fork with 117mm of travel handles European asphalt imperfections adequately, though you quickly feel those 372kg at full load exiting a tight corner. The low air-adjustable rear suspension allows load-based tuning, which makes all the difference when carrying a passenger and luggage for a two-week trip. The Reflex linked brakes, with dual 300mm front discs clamped by four-piston calipers, are up to the task of shedding that mass. The 695mm seat height remains accessible for a rider of average build — no small feat on a machine of this stature. The 22.7-liter tank allows reasonable stages before you stop, inevitably, to admire the sunset somewhere on a deserted two-lane highway.
At €25,490 in the 2015 catalog, the Street Glide Special targets a mature audience — the committed long-haul rider, probably already a Harley owner, looking to step up in comfort and equipment without crossing over to the Electra Glide and its unapologetic 400kg. This is a machine built for grand touring, not canyon carving. It demands respect in corners, an adjustment to its proportions, and a certain road philosophy that favors the mile over the sporting kilometer. The charm of the American V-twin — that deep, rhythmic rumble that seeps into your bones after 300 miles — is non-negotiable. The price, on the other hand, just might be.
