Overview
It’s impossible to look at this Sport 1000 Biposto without your heart racing. We are in 2007, and Ducati, with its SportClassic range, is playing a rare and poignant sentimental tune. Here, it's not a simple copy, but a modern reinterpretation of the café racer DNA, that of the mythical 750 S from the 1970s. The recipe? Take the 992 cm3 L-twin cylinder engine, an engine that, with its 92 horsepower at 8000 rpm and 91 Nm of torque, is a familiar acquaintance of the sporty models of the time. Graft it onto a steel trellis frame of geometric purity, and dress the whole thing in a retro line that hits the mark with every glance.

However, this Biposto version operates a pragmatic shift compared to the initial solo version. Out with the radical aesthetics of the egoist, in with conviviality. The single shock absorber gives way to two lateral combined units, and the single seat becomes an inviting bench, flanked by footrests for the passenger. Even the double lateral exhaust is split into two symmetrical elements. Modifications that slightly weigh down the silhouette, certainly, but which give the machine a dose of everyday life. With a dry weight announced at 179 kg and a seat height of 825 mm, it remains accessible, even if its 15-liter tank reminds you that trips will be punctuated by gas stations.
But be warned, beauty comes at a price, and not just the 11,000 euros it took to spend. Ducati pushed the fetishism of details to the point of self-sabotage. The superb polished spoked rims? They impose the use of tires with inner tubes, a real regression in the tubeless era. The elegant mirrors at the end of the handlebars? More of a decorative accessory than a useful one, as vibrations make them unreadable as soon as the speedometer exceeds 90 km/h. It is in the purest object of passion, where form sometimes takes precedence over function. Compared to a Triumph Thruxton of the time, smoother and more versatile, the Ducati fully assumes its stubborn and demanding character.
So, who rides this Sport 1000? Clearly not the novice. It's the motorcycle of the meticulous aesthete, the collector who wants to ride, the rider who seeks a raw and mechanical sensation rather than absolute performance. Its engine, although less ferocious than that of a modern SuperSport, delivers its power with the characteristic roughness of Ducati twins, requiring you to play with the six-speed gearbox. The braking, with its two 320 mm front discs, is effective without being lethal. It is a motorcycle of character, which asks you to participate, to compose with its defects to enjoy its unique qualities.
Ultimately, the Sport 1000 Biposto occupies a unique place in the panorama of neo-retro motorcycles. It doesn’t have the iconic status of the Paul Smart, nor the touring side of the GT. It is an imperfect café racer, sometimes a little uncomfortable, but of disarming authenticity. It doesn't seek to please everyone, it addresses those who, in front of a tank line, a frame curve, and the deep sound of a twin, are ready to make a few concessions on the altar of pure emotion. A bold gamble, that only Ducati could afford.
