Overview
When Ducati simplifies its lineup, it's never a trivial decision. In 2010, buyers had to navigate between four variants of the 1198: the base model, the S with its Öhlins, the limited-edition S Corse, and the R Corse — that barely street-legal race machine. For 2011, Bologna cuts it clean: two versions, full stop. The 1198 for the weekend sportsman, and the Ducati 1198 SP for those who want the next level without bankrupting themselves on aftermarket upgrades.

The SP suffix isn't new in the brand's catalog. The 1100 Hypermotard had already worn it, and Ducati seems to have decided to make it the marker of its most fully realized versions. In practice, this SP is an S model that has been methodically enhanced with the most serious components the industry has to offer. The 43 mm Öhlins inverted fork and the TTX monoshock form the backbone of the package — not off-the-shelf hardware, but parts drawn directly from the world of competition. The quickshifter fitted as standard puts the Ducati 1198 SP in a class of its own; at the time, only the BMW HP2 Sport dared offer this feature as standard equipment, and even then in a very different register. The aluminum fuel tank borrowed from the S Corse sheds weight, while the Marchesini rims save a kilogram per wheel — which, dynamically, genuinely changes the game.
The engine itself has not changed in nature. The Testastretta Evoluzione L-twin at 90 degrees, 1198 cc, 106 mm bore for a 67.9 mm stroke, compression ratio at 12.7:1: the architecture is that of an engine built for the track. The Ducati 1198 SP specs sheet reads 170 horsepower at 9,750 rpm and 131.4 Nm at 8,000 rpm. For a machine that tips the scales at 198 kg fully fueled, the power-to-weight ratio is frankly obscene. The claimed top speed hovers near 300 km/h — a figure that only makes sense on a circuit, but one that says a great deal about the machine's intentions.
The Ducati 1198 SP price stands at €22,690, which positions it clearly above an Aprilia RSV4 Factory or a BMW S1000RR of the era, its most direct rivals in the premium superbike segment. You pay for the specification, the badge, and a certain notion of exclusivity. For those looking today for a used Ducati 1198 SP, close attention must be paid to the maintenance history: the Desmodromic engine is demanding in that regard. The intended audience is not the novice; it is the experienced rider who understands the behavior of a high-compression twin and knows how to exploit the integrated traction control and DDA data acquisition.
What is now missing is the 1198 R Corse. With its 180 horsepower and factory SBK components, it embodied something almost irrational. The Ducati 1198 SP Corse fills the void honestly, but it does not replace that fantasy. It remains, however, in the context of 2011, what Ducati offers most completely off the shelf for going fast on open roads or during a Ducati 1198 SP track day. How much horsepower does a Ducati 1198 SP produce? 170 — and that is more than enough to remind any rider that mastery always precedes speed.
