Overview
Long ago, BMW attempted a powerful enduro with the G 450 X. The experiment was not very conclusive... So when the brand returns to this displacement with an off-road motorcycle, it is with a completely different mindset. The next F 450 GS will be a bridge between the G 310 GS and the F 800 GS. Namely, a GS particularly calibrated for A2 licenses. The Concept showcases an unprecedented machine, which is almost ready for production.
The BMW Concept F 450 GS holds the promise of cutting-edge technology. The inline twin-cylinder engine was developed from scratch and, thanks to a special ignition offset, never used before, it stands out for its character and its ability to rev. Meeting A2 class requirements, this engine delivers the full 35 kW (47.5 hp) and provides higher torque, even at low RPM.
The extremely compact dimensions of the engine, the excellent displacement/power ratio and its contained weight are the result of innovative solutions and the use of lightweight materials, such as magnesium.
In terms of the chassis as well, the BMW Concept F 450 GS establishes new standards in this segment thanks to cutting-edge technology. “We were able to begin development of this model by wiping the slate clean of everything that existed before. The goal was to achieve excellent off-road capabilities and, at the same time, agile and precise handling on the road. That is why the BMW Concept F 450 GS is equipped with a fully adjustable inverted fork and a load-dependent shock absorber, inspired by the technology used in the rally-raid and enduro fields. The targeted use of lightweight constructions and other cutting-edge solutions allows us to create a sensationally light motorcycle, close to the minimum required weight of 175 kg of the A2 category,” says Marc Weber, chief engineer of the BMW Concept F 450 GS.
Inspired by its big sister, the BMW R 1300 GS, the BMW Concept F 450 GS also establishes new standards in the areas of safety and equipment for a motorcycle of this category. Relevant features range from BMW Motorrad ABS PRO (depending on the lean angle) to a high-performance brake (Brembo / Bybre), through freely configurable riding modes. Onboard BMW connectivity and the 6.5-inch TFT screen allow you to connect the motorcycle, smartphone and other accessories.
The question that arises when looking at the BMW Concept F 450 GS is: What can be expected from a production version? Johann Simon, project manager of the BMW Concept F 450 GS, explains: “No compromises, that's for sure. Given the off-road orientation of the BMW Concept F 450 GS, we will implement a motorcycle as close as possible to this concept. We will only adjust the seat height for better accessibility and maneuverability. To replace the spoked wheels (19 inches at the front, 17 inches at the rear), lightweight but very resistant aluminum die-cast wheels of the same dimensions are also conceivable.”
BMW plans to present the production model derived from the BMW Concept F 450 GS in 2025.
