Overview
Thirty examples for France. Thirty. In a market where each manufacturer lines up "limited" series of several thousand units, Aprilia had the audacity to make a bold move in 2002 with a truly confidential edition, directly inspired by Noriyuki Haga’s mount in World Superbike. The RSV 1000 R Haga Replica is not a marketing exercise on a production bike: it's a prepared machine, delivered with a complete racing kit and a visual identity that leaves no doubt about its intentions.

The 60° V-twin of 998 cc develops 133 horsepower at 10,000 rpm, with 101 Nm of torque available at 8,000 rpm. Figures that place the machine in the same league as the great superbikes of the time, against the R1 and CBR 954 RR. But what distinguishes the Haga Replica from the standard RSV 1000 R is the set of modifications made from the factory: Akrapovic 2-into-2 exhaust system, reprogramming of the injection mapping via a dedicated Eprom, 16-tooth gearbox output sprocket to shorten the gearing. All assembled on an aluminum double-beam frame, with Öhlins suspension at both ends, 43 mm inverted fork and monoshock, tuned for track use. The solid machined fork top, tinted blue with the Haga signature engraved inside, is not just an ornament: it's proof that this bike was thought out in every detail.
The result on the Monza track, where the bike was presented to the press, is unambiguous. The short gearing gives the twin a more lively character, more responsive on exit from slow corners. This type of engine often tends to make changes of angle sluggish, to lack that sharpness that Japanese four-cylinders naturally display. Here, the lightweight wheels change the game. The reduced unsprung mass is enough to transform the behavior: the bike pivots without hesitation, chains together with a fluidity that is not necessarily expected from a large sporty twin. At 182 kg dry for 208 kg in running order, it is not light on paper, but it does not feel like a weight in the transitions.
Only one point deserves reservation: the bite of the brakes under lever pull left something to be desired during the press tests. Two 320 mm discs with four-piston calipers at the front, it's serious hardware, but the initial sensation lacked progressiveness. A defect that demanding riders will correct with a racing master cylinder, but which is jarring on a machine sold for 16,990 euros and positioned as a factory replica. For comparison, a Ducati 998 of the same era cost roughly the same price and offered a noticeably more refined braking experience from the factory.
The Haga Replica is aimed at a specific audience: the Superbike enthusiast who wants to own a piece of history, capable of riding on the track without major modifications. It is not a bike for beginners, nor even for everyday use on the road. It is an object in its own right, produced in 300 examples worldwide, the heritage value of which has steadily increased since its release. Twenty years later, finding one in good condition is like a treasure hunt. Those who have one in their garage know it.
