Imagine a turn of the millennium where the grand touring trail bike was still searching for its identity, caught between spartan adventurers and somewhat soft road bikes. It was within this context that Aprilia, drawing on its sporting expertise, launched its ETV 1000 Caponord, a bold gamble that made an impression. From its release, particularly for the 2003 model year, this Italian brought a touch of technical madness with its perimeter aluminum-magnesium frame, an architecture usually reserved for pure sportbikes. This choice was more than just a publicity stunt. It made it possible to lower the center of gravity and accommodate the large 60° twin cylinder engine derived from the RSV, here recalibrated for flexibility. The result? An engine producing 98 horsepower delivering its 97 Nm of torque with remarkable elasticity, although, to be frank, you need to use it beyond 3500 rpm to see it really work, especially in sixth gear.

On paper, this Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord had everything to seduce the demanding touring rider. Its chassis, light and nimble for the advertised 215 kilograms dry weight, offers surprising agility in the curves. The machine leans with disconcerting ease, almost like a sportbike in disguise. But that’s where the problem lies. The 50 mm fork, non-adjustable and a little too soft, struggles to contain the whole when the pace quickens or the road deteriorates. Road holding suffers, tempering the rider's enthusiasm. This is the major flaw pointed out in many tests of the Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord, a problem that fueled discussions on forums dedicated to this motorcycle.
Versatile and accessible despite its 1000 cc, the Caponord clearly targeted the motorcyclist eager to move up to larger trail bikes without ending up with an unmanageable behemoth. With a 82 cm seat height and a 25-liter fuel tank, it promised autonomy and relative comfort. Its price at the time, around 11,500 euros, placed it in direct competition with the Honda Varadero, the benchmark of the moment, and the brand new Suzuki V-Strom which arrived as a serious challenger. Today, searching for an Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord used is acquiring a piece of history, a machine with a well-tempered character. It is not the most perfect, sometimes capricious on certain mechanical points as can be the first versions, but its unique temperament and exceptional chassis forge a personality that its more polished competitors have never had. A choice for a passionate, certainly.
