Overview
What if the true road-going trail bike, the one that devours asphalt with the eagerness of a sportbike, was Italian? In the early 2000s, as the market embraced the large-capacity touring niche, Aprilia unleashed its heavy artillery with the ETV 1000 Caponord. The goal was not to create a docile elephant. No, they took the soul of an RSV, its roaring V60, and dressed it for adventure. The result? A machine with a well-defined character that marked its time and, even today, can be found on the used market with an undeniable argument: its chassis.

The secret of this Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord is its perimeter aluminum frame. A rare piece of motorcycle architecture on a trail bike, almost a provocation. This technical choice, coupled with a low engine position, lowers the center of gravity and gives surprising agility. In the city or on twisty roads, it weaves through traffic with a lightness that makes you forget its 215 kg dry weight. The large twin-cylinder engine, derived from the sportbike, was reworked for torque. It delivers 96 Nm at 6250 rpm, a tractive force that makes riding intuitive and supple. There's no need to constantly play with the gear selector; the engine swallows the gears with elasticity between 4000 and 7000 rpm. However, don't ask it for lightning-fast acceleration beyond that; it prefers substantial effort to strident liveliness.
It’s on winding roads that the beast reveals its dual nature. The chassis is precise and rigid enough to make some sportbikes envious. It leans with exemplary frankness, offering an almost sporty riding pleasure. But that's where the problem lies. The fork, too soft and not originally adjustable on the early models, struggles to keep up when the rider becomes enthusiastic. Handling can become vague, a well-known flaw often mentioned on forums dedicated to the Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord. Fortunately, from 2004, Aprilia provided a crucial response in terms of safety by offering ABS as an option, a significant plus for this powerful trail bike.
Faced with its competitors of the time, such as the more pachydermic Honda Varadero or the more budget-oriented Suzuki V-Strom, the Caponord positioned itself as an exciting alternative. It targeted the demanding touring rider, the one who seeks efficiency and pleasure above all else, and who hesitates to jump into the large-displacement category. Its price at the time, around 11,500 euros, placed it in the league of serious contenders. Today, a test ride on an Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord will convince you that it hasn't aged in terms of sensations. It’s a bold choice, with its share of potential problems to monitor when buying used, but for those seeking a trail bike with a Latin temperament and an exceptional chassis, it remains a terribly seductive option.
